Metal Ceramics Crowns for Teeth 11 and 21

The most common type of crown restoration is metal ceramic crown. Porcelain is bonded to metal alloys. The alloys used in porcelain fused to metal restoration fall into three groups:

Precious metal alloys containing high proportion of platinum and gold.
Semi-precious alloys containing a high proportion of palladium, sometimes with silver.
Base metal alloys

There is a great fifference in cost betwwen the said alloys but they all share the:

Properties of a high melting temperature so that porcelain can be bonded to the surface by being fired without the metal being melted.
Properties which permit the bonding of ceramics without affecting its color.
Properties allowing it to be cast, soldered and polished.

Indications for use of metal ceramic fixed partial denture
1. In cases of parafunctional mandibular activity where an aesthetic restoration is essential.
2. Where lingual clearance of less than 0.8 mm is present after tooth prepration.
3. Teeth requiring fixed splinting or being used as dental bridge abutments.

Metal Ceramic Fixed Partial Denture has very high strength due to prevention of crack propagation from the internal surfaces of crowns and pontics by the metal reinforcement.

Abutment teeth are upper left central incisor and upper left cuspid (21 and 23, FDI Two-Digit Notation). Missing tooth is upper left lateral incisor (22, FDI Two-Digit Notation).
